okay so....I appreciate the comments from Mari and Becca. I think that I understand that you can set settings to prevent people from commenting etc. But, this site is not secure. Meaning, anyone in the universe can get on and view any thing they want. They may not be able to post or comment, but they can view any pictures and or postings. For example, from my brother-in-laws computer, we googled Barts name, it pulled up several sites, we found the one that referred to the Clark/Iroz blog, and we were in. I guess there is nothing to worry about unless you posted something that was private or....I dont know...something that you would not want the whole entire world to see or read I suppose. For example, the cute inocent sweet picture of my little Abbi and Misty's girls in the tub together that someone at the reunion took. That is something that I would not want out there for just anyone to view or use. There is probably nothing to worry about but just be aware that it is extremely EASY to get on this site.

Welcome to the internet. I think this is an issue for a lot of people, but since we have some unusal names, more so for us. There are some things you can do to help.
1. One thing that I have done (and Arie recently did) is get our last names off the title of the blogs. 2. There is code to make the search engines skip over the blog. If I get a chance over the next few days, I'll look for it.
3. Take your last name off your blogger profile and take the profile private. That way people can't link through.
4. You can put a site meter on the site and watch who comes through. Most of the time you can tell when a random person from some random place starts watching your blog.
5. The extreme reaction would be to take the blog private where only people who have approved email addresses can come in - or so I hear. Aparently that is all the rage right now. I refuse to do so with my blog because I want to be able to give out my blog address without going through the hassle of putting email addresses in an approved list, etc. But it is something the family could discuss.
This also brings up some intersting points about what I believe is blog manners. These are the rules I abide by in my own mind.
1. Do not link to other people's blogs since they aren't able to control your traffic linking through.
2. Do not post pictures of naked children, particularly if they aren't your own.
3. Think twice before using full names when describing people.
4. Don't blog it if you aren't sure you are ok with a long lost "friend" seeing it or a potential employer seeing it.
I am such a stickler about #1 and #2 that I would email someone and request they take something off their blog if I feel it brings undue attention.
Alright. Need to run. I'll look for the searchable code and get back to everyone.
Nicole brought up some good points. My paticular concern is people linking. I have my blog "unlisted" so it doesn't attract undue attention but sometimes I get randoms from people who have linked to my blog through their own. I've been known to send out a friendly email requesting them to please remove my information from their blog.
I'm currently in the process of editing all last name references out of my blog--also took it to a new website name. I watch my tracker pretty carefully. I've had instances where I didn't know what who an IP address belonged to, found out they linked through another blog, and emailed that blog owner to find out the identity of a paticular computer.
Blogging is a wonderful tool but I think it should be done with intention and thought.
We could take this blog private or your personal blog, only making it available to approved email addresses (and then within so many days the viewers have to apply for a gmail account if they don't already have one). I'm not ready to put those restrictions on mine, but if I ever find I don't have the time to monitor mine in the manner I do now, or if I find I'm attacting questionable traffic that I can't otherwise shake, I would consider it.
This blog was listed in the blogger directory and yes was selected to being searchable by search engines. I changed both of those options to no. The search engines will probably still be able to pull it for a few days though. A reroute code (like Nicole talked about) written into the HTML would be another nice way to avoid any searches.
Thank you Aurelie, Nicole, Venita and anyone else concerned about this. I have known there would be issues and since I am responsible for starting this I feel responsible but it is such a blessing in our lives also that I just would hate to not have it. I do appreciate those of you knowing more of the technology side of the issue taking it upon yourselves to make our site as safe as possible. Like all blessings there will always be the negative to counterbalance our life. I'm sorry there would be those who would use anyones blog for devious or unholy practices but this is the world we live in now and all of us need to be aware and follow safe procedures. Please stay alert and do what needs to be done. We love you all and would be so sad to not be able to visit your blogs often.
